Car Graveyard

I was a child of divorce and, as such, was often taken by my dad on weekends when I was a kid. He spent most of that time waxing his car at my grandparents who lived out in nowhere North Carolina, since he lived in a condo with no hoses to wash his precious.

Ignored, my brother and I were typically left to our own devices and wandered the fields and woods around my grandad’s land, which was about a half hour drive from civilization. My family owned the neighboring homes and great swatches of land between and behind the houses, so we could pretty much explore out there for hours.

All this said, there were some really odd things that happened there, and I personally think they’re either too absurd or too subtle to have been my childhood imagination. You can decide for yourselves though, and I’d love to hear what you guys think might have been going on. Here’s some things I remember:

Car Graveyard

My great uncle was a kind of Jack of all trades and he bought/sold used cars. He also bought wrecks to strip and scrap, dumping the useless husks in a field/the woods up a trail behind his house. My brother and I called this place the “Car Graveyard”. On it’s own it was eerie, with cars all the way back from the 50s in various states of disrepair.

I used to climb inside them... until I got into one that was tacky with what might have been dried blood. Sometimes I’d find bones out there, deer mostly. But they’d be in odd places, like skulls on car hoods. My guess it was just poachers on his land messing around because my uncle didn’t hunt, but who knows. Never saw any with skin/fur.

One day, my brother and I were going to the Car Graveyard, but up the trail to it started to hear what sounded like pained moaning up ahead, where the derelicts were. We turned tail that day.

Oddest, perhaps, from the Car Graveyard was the one time we actually went really far back to see just how deep the cars went. It continued into the woods for a while, with trees sometimes growing right out of the wrecks. My brother and I saw something ahead that looked like fog or mist (which reminds me of a story from somewhere else, if y’all are interested, I’ll post that too), and we didn’t think much of it because we were kids, but this was mid afternoon and only in one area.

We passed on through and felt... inexplicably weird and decided to give up on seeing how far back it went. When we got back to my grandads’ place, things still seemed off. It was hard to explain, like my dad looked like my dad and acted like him, but he didn’t feel the same. My brother felt this same dissonance too.

We got this wild idea that when we crossed the fog, we somehow stepped into another dimension, maybe just slightly different from our own. Maybe it was just stupid kid stuff, but I still remember how oppressive this feeling of not belonging was. We booked it back and crossed the fog again, and everything immediately felt right as rain.

Went back as an adult to that same spot. No fog, but there was a particularly off-putting sensation. That’s... a less interesting tale though.

A few other odd things that happened out there but not in the Graveyard:

Flying Monkey

I hesitate to add this one because it’s so... goofy , but what the heck. One day my brother and I were messing with my grandads walkie-talkies and we saw a odd looking bird in the sky. We joked that it looked like a flying monkey from Wizard of Oz, and said “flying monkey, flying monkey, come in flying monkey!” Into the talkies. Another voice came through and said “someone get me a flying banana”. A bit spooked, we went into the kitchen and took a banana to leave outside and stayed indoors for the rest of that visit. When we left, only the peel was sitting outside.

That’s about all I got for that area. There’s a few things from inside the house, but that’s not what the sub is for. I can relay if Y’all want though. Feel free to ask any questions too.
