Angry Whispering

Not a police officer, but for a few years I was a security guard at a high end apartment complex. I had two calls to investigate hauntings there.
One was nothing special. Guy claimed that there was a 'little girl' who was haunting him and he said that he 'felt' that she was haunting the apartment because she was murdered there and it was unsolved. He had just moved in days prior. The building is an adult-only building and has been for as long as anyone can remember. Of course a child who didn't live there could have died there, but there were no news results and no one before or after that resident ever complained of ghosts.
The second one I get three 20-something guys come down to my office at like 3 am. One is in tears, another is frazzled, and the other looks like he was just dragged out of bed. They told me that they were hearing "angry whispering" over and over again, but every time they'd look for the source, it'd stop. Only to start again once they tried to go back to sleep. The crying one said the sound was coming from his room, the frazzled one said he heard it too, the last one didn't but just wants them to stop freaking out.
Im thinking it's a prank or something. I go up and have a look, poke in corners and under furniture. After about 10 minutes I give up, and try to offer some plausible explanations, such as noise from surrounding apartments.
Then we hear it. Just as they said, loud, angry whispering. Sounds like words but we can't make out what they are. Me and the formerly sleepy roommate quickly start going through stuff and running around, trying to find the source, while the other two freak the fuck out and run into the hallway. Just after the sound stops, I find an old cell phone crammed into a gap between the trim and doorframe of their closet. It was one of those music phones with the big speaker on it, the kind that were popular just before smartphones became a thing. These guys had just moved into this apartment from a smaller apartment within the same building. The old tenants must have forgotten the phone. The speaker was damaged on the phone, and it had an alarm set to play a song. Every time it went off, it made the most godawful sound, explaining the angry whispering.
Still frazzled but relieved, they finally go to bed. I get a chuckle and go back to my office.
