Not A Bear

No no no no nooooo. I'm from SE Arkansas and still live here. My road is paved. Now anyway. When I was very young (early 90s) it was dirt. Anyway, I had a similar thing happen to me!

My dad and I went hunting early one morning near a local creek. It was early as hell, pretty dark and chilly. We had left the truck and were going through the woods towards the creek. He helped me climb over an old cattle fence that was still standing and we carried on another few minutes. We got the creek in sight and were just quietly waiting.

It was 15 or 20 minutes later and I realized I could hear some rustling coming from somewhere behind us. The sound starting moving quicker then there was a sort of twang sound like it had hit the old fence that we had crossed. A moment later the noises picked up again.

By this time my dad has shoved me behind him and up against a tree to keep me as still and quiet as possible. I hear the animal pause, make some noises then continue on and then there are splashing sounds. I peeked out from behind my dad and saw what I thought was a bear standing and wading across the creek. It kept going and vanished into the woods on the other side.

About 5 minutes later my dad snatched our stuff up and hustled me back out of the woods. I kept wanting to talk about the bear and when we got back to the truck he told me it wasn't a bear, but 'something else altogether' and not to come into the woods again. He refused to talk about it again.

It was standing up, very hairy and big as hell. Bear or something else I don't know. But as an adult I know bears are exceedingly rare in this flat part of the Arkansas delta. This country girl has never attempted hunting again.
