Not My Sister's Voice
I was trying to tape my sister on the phone one night using a tape recorder, back in maybe 1993. My friends and I were mean little shits, and we'd splice my sister's pirated phone conversations into things like fake radio interviews with Layne Staley.
I left the tape recorder on for several hours one night while I was downstairs, and my sister was upstairs on the phone. I had never heard of EVP at the time, this being the pre-internet days.
When I played the tape back later, I was baffled to find three separate voices that were NOT my sister talking back and forth amongst themselves. The voices were much closer to the tape recorder than my sister was, which meant the speakers had to have been in my room.
One of the voices was low and kind of mild, like a little girl: one of them was raspy and strangled, like someone pretending to be a goblin or speaking through a constricted throat, and the last was a clear little whisper. They would respond to things my sister said, they'd tell her to shut up.
Not everything they said really made sense: there was a particularly clear voice on the tape that said what sounded very much like "I can't charge anybody. Ha. Ha, Ha."
Another suddenly hissed "Jesus Christ," and then a weird electrical whine came over the tape for a few seconds.
At the end, one of them said, VERY clearly next to the machine, "(Sysiphuslove) is coming back." Moments later you can hear me coming back up the stairs and walking back into the room.
I was so shocked by that tape that I snatched up the boombox and ran downstairs, out of the house and five blocks across town, at 8:00 PM to a friend's house so I could make him listen to it. He too could hear the voices very clearly, but neither of us had any idea that ghosts could talk on audio tape like that.
What really made the most convincing case to me was the fact that the voices responded to things that were going on. That meant there had to be some kind of sentience there. And that led to a whole lot of wondering just what the fuck is going on here, anyway.
