Just A Ghost
Oh, yeah. We moved to a 1929 home when my oldest son was born. When we moved him into his big boy room (next baby got the baby’s room), we heard him talking nonstop to himself, which hadn’t happened before. When I stood outside the door to listen, he was answering questions. And laughing. Lots of laughing. I assumed he must be entering some sort of hyperverbal phase. I even asked the pediatrician about it. Or maybe it was an adjustment to the new room?
One night while I was reading him a bedtime story, I noticed he was staring at the ceiling while I was reading. Only his eyes were moving, tracking something. I sort of offhandedly asked ‘what are you looking at?’ He said ‘the boy in the corner. See him?’ And pointed above and behind me.
So I just kept reading and then after a few minutes my son said ‘we like this story’.
About a year later the boys nanny and I were both home. She had put them both down for a nap and had come back into the kitchen while I was working on the computer in the family room. We were close together. Pretty soon we both heard the distinct sound of little kid footsteps coming down the stairs. (They put one foot down and then the other onto the same step, the second one is louder. Repeat.).
Then we heard ‘Mom?’
A little boy voice but it wasn’t either of my sons’.
It was slightly older sounding and clearer. My nanny looked at me and said ‘I’ll get him’.
I heard her go upstairs. She came back about a minute later and didn’t say anything at first.
I was looking at her and she said ‘just a ghost. Do you know you have a ghost?’
😳
